CONTROL OF SCHOOLS

WANGANUI EDUCATION BOARD. MONTHLY MEETING. 'The monthly meeting of the Wanganui Education Board was hold in Wanganui yesterday, those present being Mr E. J. Hemingway (chairman), Colonel J. H. Whyte and Messrs JW. E. Batchelar, I. \V. Mudford, A. S. Coleman, P. Munro, L. A. Bailey and N. Annabel]. The secretary (Mr G. N. Boulton) reported that the contract for the conveyance of children from Manawatu Heads to the Foxton District High School had been brought to finality. The service was now running, and it was anticipated that it would meet the requirements of the children. —Received. The Education Department notified that it was unable to approve of a grant for the equipment of a cookery room at thc -Apiti School, or agree to the appointment of a male parttime instructor as recommended. —Received. The Central School Committee advised that it was unable to find the sum requested for tho reinstatement of the baths. It was suggested that the architect (Mr E. 11. Hodge) meet the committee and dismiss other ways of meeting the position. —This was agreed to.

The architect reported on certain maintenance and repair y%rk required at the Ashhurst School and residence, and it was decided to have this carried out.

It was reported that the cost of a, close-hoarded fence along the rear of the Russell Street School grounds would lie . over £IOO, whereas the estimate of the committee had been £OS. —The board decided to seek an additional grant from the Education Department to cover the extra cost The chairman reported that he had authorised the submission to the department. of an application for a grant toward the cost of erecting a dental clinic at the Foxton District High School. Tho committee is to find a third of the-sum required.

ARCHITTCT’S REPORT. The architect (Mr E. K. Hodge) reported, inter alia: “Marton District High School. — The now building work may be regarded as completed. Beaconsfield: A post-hole bore system has been sunk at the teacher’s cottage, and a concrete slab laid at the back door. Whakarongo : A domestic hot water service has boon installed, and the residence provided with new spoutings. Cheltenham : A domestic hot water service and a new electric range have been installed. Waituna West: The installation of an electric hot water service has been arranged. Central School: A new water main has been provided from the city service to the boys’ out-office. Tlie new boiler and pumping outfit have been installed, and the heating plant is functioning satisfactorily. Kairanga: A domestic hot water service has been installed. Awahou North : A porch has been erected over the back door of the residence, and general repairs effected. Hokowhitu: A new entrance gate has been fixed and repairs to the drains and concrete areas effected. Terrace End: The garage building is now hearing completion, painting work only remains to be done. Central Dental Clinic: The work in connection with the erection of the new clinic is now well in hand, and should be completed within the specified time limit. Palmerston North Technical School : Reroofing of the flats of tho main building is in hand, and completion should be accomplished within one week. Apiti: Arrangements have been made for the ercctio nof three new tanks. Rangiotu: Arrangements have been made for the renewal of two tanks. Manchester Street, Feilding: The materials have been ordered and are coming to hand for the erection of an open-air classroom. “The past month has been one of such climatic condition ns to cause considerable delay and inconvenience to the board’s works. The change in the weather we are experiencing is welcomed and will, I hope, afford an opportunity ,of pushing ahead with the many works awaiting execution.” added Mr Hodge. TEACHING CHANGES.

Tho following changes in the staffing in this district were approved: — Appointments: Mr J. C. YVhiblev, principal, Palmerston North Intermediate Scliol; Miss H. S. Schmidt, sole teacher, Dunolly; Miss 0. Kerr, assistant mistress, Haleombe; Miss P. E. Peters, assistant mistress, Manchester Street; Miss E. D. Tily, assistant mistress, Oroua Downsy; Miss M. C. Forbes, additional assistant, Oroua Downs.
