IN MID-CANTERBURY.
I Per Press Association. ASHBURTON, July 31. Ashburton County, which escaped lightly from the previous storm, had its first real touch of wintry weather yesterday. Twelve inches of snow are reported from the districts along the foothills, with five inches in tlie Ashburton Borough. The whole area between had only three snowfalls. In the coastal area's there were up to three inches. A report from Rakaia Gorge savs that some drifts are up to loft! Great difficulty is being experienced in saving sheep. On plains few lambs are about, and no heavy losses of stock have been reported. Tt is still snowing heavily alone* tlie hills, and there are intermittent’ hail and sleet elsewhere.
