MANAWATU COUNTY

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. DELAY IN STRIKING RATE. The monthly meeting of the Manawatu County Council was hold yesterday at Sanson. The following were present: Crs. W. E. Barber (chairman), J. Boyce, A. N. Morconi. W. E. Pearce, R. A. Wilson and D. W. Reid. On the motion of Cr. Wilson, seconded by Cr. Reid, it was decided to apply to the Minister of Internal Affairs for an Order-in-Council to enable the council to use last year’s valuation roll for the striking of rates for the currant year. There was no discussion on the motion, which has become necessary owing to a revaluation of the county being under way.

The Minister of Internal Affairs (Hon. W. E. Parry) advised that Arbor Day would this year be observed on August 2, and drew attention to damage by fire.—Received. The clerk (ATr A. Iv. Drew) reported that a private firm, already having on order a mechanical shovel, an appliance which the council required. had offered the machine to the council. The matter had been referred to the Main Highways Board and the latter Dad advised that no approval would be given for the purchase of plant where sterling funds were affected. It was possible that an import license had already been issued for the machine, but the board desired to withhold its sanction to purchase the machine until it was actually in stock. —The letter was received.

Amendments to the traffic regulations which are to come into force on Thursday were advised by the Transport Department. Messrs R. R. Bryant and J. ERiches wrote objecting to the inclusion of a section of the Manawatu County within the Horowhenua Abattoir area. A petition on the same lines was received from 21 ratepayers. —The council decided to take no action. Mr J. Giles (Makowhai) wrote seeking permission to plant trees on the line of Soldiers’ Road. —The. matter was left in the bands of the engineer and the chairman with power to act. Tile by-laws inspector (Mr AV. Berry) reported that he bad patrolled the roads but had found no wandering stock.—Received. The sanitation inspector (Mr S. B_. Reed) reported that from April 15 to June 30 there had been reported in the county one case of dysentery, five of tuberculosis and two of infantile paralysis.-—Received. Merritt, lot 1, sections 71 and 73, township of Sandon ; Whitanui. Ltd., to Mrs R. M. Terrill, part rural sections 445, 446, and 447, lot 1, on D.P. No. 7078; Poplar Flaxmilling Co., Ltd., to J. JMcErlean, Iwi Te Kai A Nos. 1 and l and B2 and part B. No. 1 Block; E. sf. Sneiling to Edwd. S. Oliver, lots 8C and 8D subdivision, part section 2GB, blk. I Moutere S.D. ; 4Y. E. F. Odgors to SV. J. F. Odgers, section 4S, Kopane Settlement. The tramway manager (Mr Drew) reported ns follows for June: —“The items of traffic were: sletal, 15 c. yards; minerals, 101 tons; merchandise, 3 tons; manure. 111 tons;..timber, 59 021 ft,; posts and firewood, 2 trucks; steel, etc., 21 tons; general items, \ ton. The earnings were £BB 17s 6d. and the runnisg expenses £144 16s. showing a debit balance of £55 18s 6d.” Tho treasurer (51 r Drew) reported that tho county fund account, was in debit by £555 i9s 7d and the loan account in credit by £2892 12s lid. The receipts since last meeting had totalled £2793 Is 7d. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The engineer (Mr H. V. Bond), whose report was adopted, staled: County roads and bridges: 51etal patching, lias been carried, out oil Karikari, Ohakea, AA'ilson’s, slcDoneH’s and Cemetery Roads. The access road to the aerodrome is still demanding very heavy maintenance, the cost of which is being kept so that- a contribution can be applied for lrom the department. Drain cleaning has also been carried out in this district. AVatcr-tables have been cleared and slips removed on Cemetery and Rakehou Roads. Drains and culverts have been cleaned on Pirinoa and Rata Streets and Halcombe-Mt. Stewart Roads. Two old culverts have been removed and replaced with reinforced concrete pipes on tho Halcombe-51t. Stewart Road. Surface metal has been spread on Kawa Kawa Road and Lee’s Line. During the recent heavy rains considerable flooding has taken place in tho Makowhai area. The classification of this drainage area has been completed and the schedules are now being prepared. Drains - have been cleaned on Banks-AAbiitolii, Taipo and 51 ill Roads. sletal patching has been continued on roads in the Kopane area.. One bridge on Pyke’s Road has been redecked and one largo wooden culvert on tho uninetalled portion of that road has been replaced. Watertables and drains have been cleaned on Puawni, Saunders, Ivollow’s and Taikorea Roads. AA'atertables and drains hnvo been cleaned on Linklater Avenue, Bowes and Ivero Kero Roads. General: River protection work is being carried out on tho Rangitikei River below the crushing plant. The tram sheds at Taikorea. Whale and Rosina and the slieopyards at Rosina were sold by public tender and have since been removed. The Sandon Cemetery has been cleaned up and grass has been cut. both in the cemetery and on the reserve at slt. Stewart. One of the cottages at Sanson has been renovated. Three building permits have been issued to the value of £3030. The Piikenui crushing plant has been working throughout the month, but single shift work has been reverted to. In all 4891 c. yds. of metal were delivered during June. sfa in Highways: Surface metal lias been spread on Foxton - Shannon, Rongotea - Longburn. Tangimoana and RongoteaRanglotu main highways. All metalsurfaced highways have been graded at regular intervals. One pipe culvert. on the Rongoten-Rangiotu highwav has been lowered. A temporary bruise lias been erected on sft. Stewart highway. No further work oilier than maintenance lias lwen undertaken hv the contractor oil the road. The Ecilding-Awaluiri Road contract has been more or less at a standstill owing-, to very wet conditions. 'The crib work has been comnletod, drainage is being continued and. the excavation of un-j suitable material just north of Stew-' art’s Line is being recommenced. The stop-hank at Kawa Kawa Road lias been raised for the interested settlers.
