FATALITY NEAR LEVIN.

WELL-KNOWN RESIDENT’S DEATH.

CAll COLLIDES WITH LORRY

LEVIN, July 17. Dir. Bertie Rupert Way, a middleaged married mail, proprietor of a garage in Levin, was killed to-night in a motor collision which occurred on the Levin-Foxton main highway, about five miles north of Levin, at 6.40 p.m. Dir. Way occupied the front seat and was a passenger in his own car, which was being driven to Foxton from Levin by Dir. J. Hay field, of Levin. About 200 yards north of the point where Kawiu Road West joins the main highway tho ear collided with the rear of a heavy stationary motorlorry, owned by Mr. B. L. Evcrton, and facing in tho same direction as the car was travelling. Tho lorry was in the charge of Dir. T. J. A. DTarchnnt. It is reported that just prior to the accident tlie lorry’s lights had fused and the driver was endeavourin" to make repairs The left-hand side of the car struck the tray of the lorry with terrific force, tearing the side out of portion of the roof. Dir. Way received shocking injuries and death must have been instantaneous.

The driver of the car escaped practically unhurt, receiving only slight cuts. The impact turned the lorry side on and pushed it down the hank at the side of the road. Dir. DYav had lived in Levin for about 10 years and was one of the town’s best-known citizens. It is understood he was formerly a resident of Feilding.
