DISPUTE SETTLED.
NIAGARA SAILS. SYDNEY, June 9. The Union Company liner Niagara, which bad just come out of dock after undergoing an extensive overhaul, and was due to sail Inst night for Auckland, did not get away till 1 p.m. to-day as a result of a dispute over the engineers’ quarters. The 450 passengers took the holdup philosophically; nevertheless they were glad when informed that the dispute was settled. The trouble arose because several of the junior engineers were dissatisfied with their quarters. Members of the crow said the quarters for the engineers left much to he desired. One man said : “Some cabins are like boxes and become unbearable for two men to live in when we reach the tropics.” The men allege they were promised that arrangements would lie made for them to obtain single-berth cabins during the Niagara’s recent lay-up, and when they found this had not been done they decided to strike. The fact that practically all the passenger accommodation was taken up presented a serious difficulty to the finding of alternative berths lor the engineers. However. rearrangement of some of the berths is to he made during the voyage in order to overcome the grievance. Two engineers have been given a first-class cabin lavishly furnished which met with the union.official's approbation. AUCKLAND ON MONDAY. depa ktur e for yaNCOU YE Li DELAYED. Per Press Association.
