A letter was received from the Oroua County Council in reply to tin. liorough Council’s letter requostiu,., that tile Cemetery Road and liniiuy-thorpe-Ashluirst Road he considered when further tar-sealing work is contemplated, 'Hie Oroua Council advised that it intended to make a start with the [iiinnyt horpe-Ashhurst Hoad this year, lint in respect of the Cemetery Road, the letter added that the council was prepared to consider its sealing providhd the' liorough Council would meet half the cost.— It was staled that the liorough Council could not see its way clear to pay hall the

cost, and the letter was received with out. further comment.

It was decided to write asking Air 0. T. Alley, officer in charge of the Country Library Service to address the ratepayers and outline the objects and workings of the service. This decision was arrived at when a letter was before the council stating that Air Alley proposed to visit Eejlding. Ju respect of an application by the Eeilding Howling Club lor a remission ol rates in terms ol the Rating Act, 192-j. the club was advised to obtain an adjustment of values in terms of the Valuation ol Land Act, ll)2o. Tho council decided to refer back to the finance and works committees for further consideration an application by 'a ratepayer lor a.n extension of the sewer to a section in Derby Street. The council passed a formal resolution confirming the levying of rates lor the year 1939-40. A fairly large number of street tree; in Denbigh Street and Derby Stree have not survived; “32 in Denbigl Street and 28 in Derby Street will re quire to he replaced if it is decided ti maintain the lines ” states the bor otigh engineer in his report. Cr. Ho regretted that the trees had boon abused. The .Mayor said he was glad Cr. Andrews had mentioned the matter and he, too, had noticed that some of the trees had not been cared for properly, and he regretted that some of tlu> residents lacked the civic pride the efforts to beautify .the town deserved. Cr. McClure felt that the main cause of the trees’ failure had been carelessness on the part of the residents concerned, and he considered that it would ho, a waste of money to replace the trees. The Mayor said that the trees which had been eared for were healthy and were making good growth, and he would not like to see the scheme to beautify the I own abandoned. The remaining trees would look lnneIv and patchy if replacements of the dead ones were not made, Cr. Desmond said. The council decided to replant trees in the vacancies. OFFICIALS’ REPORTS. Mr I!. K. Ilepworth (abattoir manager) reported for May as follows, the figures in parentheses being those for the corresponding month la-1 year: —24 cows (99), 12 oxen (15) 98 heifers (30), ewes (28), 382 wethers (314), lambs (9), 1454 pigs (1971), 9 vealers (4), and 3 hobby calves (2) were dealt with at the abattoir. Fees amounted to £227 8s 2d, as compared with £283 11s for the corresponding month of last year. Mr li. \V. 11. Wood (librarian) advised that there were now 236 subscribers to the library and during May 32 new hooks had been placed on the shelves, while the number of books changed bad totalled 3172. Mr T. K. Ilav (borough engineer) reported that good progress was being made with the work in connection with the new Kiwilea Stream bridge. 'I lie abutments and piers had been completed, and temporary piles driven for carrying the framework. Rapid progress was also 1 icing made with the filling in of tfie approaches. Twelve men engaged under rlio subsidised labour scheme had been dispensed with. A total of 1090 cubic yank of metal were put through the crusher during the month, and of that amount 458' yards had been used for street, maintenance, 146 yards sold, and 486 yards placed on dumps.
