DRAINAGE CONTROL.

MAKERUA BOARD. Air H. Alexander, at the monthly meeting of the Makeruu Drainage’ Board = yesterday. signified his desire to be relieved ol his seat owing to the difficulty of hearing proceedings, hut was subsequently .prevailed upon to reconsider his decision. The chairman (Air H. Seifert) said that Air Alexander was a very desirable member, as he took a keen interest in the district’s affairs. . Those present were Messrs Seifert, H. Sancs, H. J. D. Aitehismi, AY. Jackson, C. T. A\ . Clifford and G. Larsen. The chairman reported that by-laws had been drafted to prevent farmers )’rum emptying residue from pig-styes and cow hails into drains, mid, in ca.se of their so doing to order cleaning operations to be undertaken. 'I ticker) submitted the following report: “The cleaning of drains has been continued, including Smith’s drain . (dredge channel), Bit’nie and Coombs’s, Wall’s, old main (south ol intersecting channel) Akers’s (south of channel), and Russ’s drain, the latter being reconditioned and all the fall possible being taken up to the lagoon. With, the exception of Akers’s drain north, Seifert’s drain south and Rowland’s drain ,all ol which are at present being cleaned by contract, all the board's drains have now been cleaned. As the floodgate on the Poplar tramline was of no further use, a permanent concrete wall lias been mi jit lo replace the wooden gate used in time of Hoods. A start bits been made with the river protection work', cable being prepared, and anchors arc now being placed at Page’s Point. 'J lie rccnml l l tuning of Lung’s stopbank oil left bank of Kara C’rcek is now being carried out with No. 13 scheme labour. At present eight men are employed, and fair progress is being made.” As the time is now opportune for planting willow trees, the hoard i.s to initiate steps to have this work carried out. The overseer is to he instructed to proceed with urgent work at Page’s Point. A settler at Opiki is to ho instructed to close a floodgate immediately and allow it. in future, to work with the water. Otherwise action will be taken by the board to have the ottLlet closed. Reporting on tlm financial position, the clerk (Air N. I. Nielsen) said the balance at the bank at the date of the last meeting was £1(528 16s Kid. Lodgements made since came to 82-12 17s 2d. The balance after accounts passed at the meeting had been paid would be £1485 5s Id. The total amount of rales still outstanding was £11)17 Os 2d. Employment Board wages to he refunded totalled £55 4s.
