(By “Spectator.”) Although ho did not. have strong opposition in his winning efforts in (lie Hunt Club events at Kllerslie. the seven-year-old gelding Bridegroom, who is trained at Awapuni by L. Knapp, made a fine impiession by his easy victories and splendid jumping. Bred by Mr K. Loiscl, who sold him very cheaply, Bridegroom is an upstanding black gelding by Mimetic, son ot Comedy King, from Bridal Veil, by California, a good handicap performer who won the Avondale Cup in 1910 with 9Y2, from Rosewater, by Waterfall from Primrose, by Mute from Heather Bell, by Figaro. There is some good slaying blood in the pedigree, and, although ho is inclined to carry his head a trifle high, Bridegroom impresses as one likely to do well over a course like Riccarton. The real test lias yer, to come for Bridegroom, but ho appears likely lo carry his record much further. At ono stage of his career Bridegroom was sold for £lO, but ho cost his present owner, Mr K. Duncan, a good deal more than that. Mounts at Hastings. Riding engagements for the Hawke’s Bay meeting to-morrow include-.; —W. J. Mudford: Royal Minstrel, Laughing Song, Mariyas. H. C. It is many years since an amateur rode in the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase, but ladishah will lose no friends through tlio fact that Mr G. Boatson will have tho mount on him. Old Rivals Meet. When Royal Appellant and Valminl fought out tho finish in the Cornwall Handicap at Ellerslie it was not tho first occasion on’ which they havo finished first and second in a race, as they occupied tho samo positions in tho York Handicap at Ellerslie two years ago.
