REMOVAL OF BEES
PERMIT NOT OBTAINED. EON TON, June S. At the monthly sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, before Mr A. M. Colliding, S.M., G. A. Hobbs (Mr M. B. Bergin), was lined 5s and costs l.or removing two hives oi bees without a permit to do so. Inspector H. F. Dodson. Department of Agriculture, said he called at the residence ol the late Mrs \V. Symons recently to inspect two hives of . lioes there. He learned that there j had been a change in ownership of j the property, and was informed that Hobbs had taken the bees away. Witness called at Hobbs’s residence, and he admitted having moved the bees but adopted a very abusive attitude, alleged that witness was “trying to get one on to him.” Witness had. sent defendant a circular letter in January of last year warning him j against such a practice. i Mr Bergin said that when the house changed hands the new owners had asked Hobbs to remove the bees, which] were a nuisance. He did so and claimed to he ignorant of the Act. He also stated that lie had not received nnv circular from the department. Hobbs had been connected with the industry for a long time, and was aware of the rbk of spreading infection. He had 25 loves himself, and carefully inspected the two new hives before moving them. The inspector: I have, an acknowledgment from Hobbs of receipt of my circular. The Magistrate: There has been a breach of tlm Act. hut no doubt defendant exercised care in impacting tile hives before removing them. A conviction will have to l>o recorded, however, as a warning to others.
