CUBAN REFUGE REFUSED. OTHERS ATTEMPT SUICIDE. EGYPT LAST HOPE. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyrinh t.) Received June 8, 8.5 a.m. HAVANA, June 7. The inability of Hie Jewish refugees to meet the Government’s demand for the payment of 500 dollars by each person has resulted in the cancellation by President Bru of the proposal for a. temporary asylum on the Isle of Pines. Representatives of the refugees were able to muster 240,000 dollars, but tho Cuban Government would not allow them time to raise the difference. Two other vessels carrying 252 Jewish refugees also have been refused entry to Cuban waters. Meanwhile, an Independent Cable Service message from Alexandria says that eight Jewish refugees from Germany attempted a mass suicide by poisoning when told they were not allowed to land in Egypt. All are critically ill in hospital. They previously had tried to land in Greece, Turkey, Syria and Palestine, and Egypt was their last hope. A Haifa message says that the Greek schooner Assimi, with 200 Jews on board, has been arrested.
