WOODVILLE & DISTRICT

DAIRYING INTERESTS. Messrs T. A. 1!. Sinclair and It• C. Leach represented the A\ oodville Dairy Co. at the meeting of companies’ representatives at Dannevirku, convened by the southern Hawke’s Bay Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union, for the purpose of discussing dairy problems. Mr 11. C. Leach, of Woodcille, said he thought the move an excellent one. He knew it would he whole-heartedly supported by dairyfarmers anil dairy companies at his end of the district also by the Woodville branch of the Farmers’ Union. One thing which troubled him very much was to see the large number of cheese factories closing down. He said tliis was a bad thing for New Zealand as markets would be lost. Ho considered that the Government should concern itself about this matter. From what he had heard 14 more cheese factories were closing down this year, and at the end of last year approximately 30 had closed down. The high overhead costs of cheese factories were a big factor, but something should be done to save their cheese market. The butter market would always be available, but it was a pity to see the cheese going, because to a certain extent New Zealand had a monopoly in if. He hoped that this committee would deal with the matter. Mr Leach moved the motions, which were carried, dealing with the subject. These were published in the “Evening Standard” yesterday. r l he question was raised, now that the herd testing had gone out of existence in this district because the whole matter was centred in accordance with regulations at Palmerston North, whether the potter cow drives would continue. A delegate assured the meeting that herd testing would not. be discontinued. The details for the luture were not yet available, but he would _be able to reoort at the next meeting of the committee. The question of herd testing was now under the jurisidietion of the herd improvement scheme. The question of a veterinary appointment was raised. Mr Loach stated that stock diseases needed going into carefully, and he felt that the Government was probably not taking up the matter seriously enough. In regard to mainmitis there were many socalled cures on the market, and probably some do more harm than good. Me would like the Government to give a lead as to the use of same. Cattle licks were also discussed, the meeting being of oninion that the Agriculture Department should give its approval to these before they are used. It was resolved that all cattle licks should be analysed by the Government and the necessary certificate attached before they are sold on the open market.
