TROUT FISHING

(To (he Editor.)

Sir, —In last Friday s “Evening Standard’’ I read a very inteiesiing article on local fishing by the ranger. Mr T. Andrews. While I do not doubt the fish mentioned were caught and weighed in correctly, parts ot the article are definitely lar from correct. To compare the local river with Taupo is impossible and it is safe to say there are more fish taken in one week at Taupo than in the whole season locally. One local angler came back from Taupo on Saturday with eight good-conditioned fish, one over 6 lb. ; during the week he managed to land just on 10. Five seasons ago I caught over 200 myself, while this season I would hate to mention numbers, and yet I generally get ray share. A good local amdor just a few years backtotalled over 250 for the first six weeks of the season, while this year 00 would cover his bags. Most anglers will have to go flat out until April 00 to reach double figures. Fishing in the Manawatu has slumped terribly during recent years with only worse to follow. If our ranger over happens to ‘‘get the goods” on anyone sneaking from the r’ver with over the limit in bis bag. “what a catch.” The license tees were increased last season and there is a, whisper of another. What for? If shooters get ws good a run for their fee rusty barrels will be quite common. —I am. etc..
