LAWN TENNIS
MANAWATU ASSOCIATION, An application from the Palmerston North Club to hold their annual tournament, in conjunction with that of the association, on January 3,4, 5 and (>, 1940, was considered at a meeting of the executive of the Alanawatu Lawn Tennis Association, last evening. The club also asked permission to have the North Island championship tournament held with their annual tourney.
The Pahiatua Club wrote requesting the association to forward on tlieir behalf an application for the championship to bo held at Pahiatua at the New Year.
Mr C. C. Yates; Palmerston North applied last year and woro turned down.
Air J. T. AfoDonald said that the club thus had the prior right to the North Island tournament. It was eight or nine years since the tournament had been hold here. It was decided to send both applications forward to the New Zealand Association, and also to forward one from the association asking permission to hold the tournament, in the Manawatu.
Those present at the meeting were Alessrs J. T. AlcDonald (in the chair), R. 0. liaddon (secretary), _ Airs B. French, and Alessrs C. C- Antes, J. Christie and L. A. Reichenbach. A letter acknowledging bis past services to the association and congratulating him upon His promotion to a teaching position in Woodville is to he sent to AH R. D. L. Irvine, formerly of Levin, who was secretary of the Levin Club, and one of the supervisors of the secondary school tournament. Aliss E. E. Stephens, principal of the Girls’ High School, and the ALnnawatu Club, are also to be written to thanking them for the use of courts tor the tournament.
The New Zealand Umpires’ Association notified that they had passed a resolution requesting that free admission be granted to any holder of the association’s badge to any tournament,. a proviso being that the wearer umpire If called upon to do so. Agreed to, it being resolved to forward the letter to the Palmerston North and Pahiauta Clubs, these being the only ones in the district to hold open tournaments. _ An application sheet for New Zealand ranking honours was received, it being considered not advisable to nominate n.ny Manawatu players. Accounts totalling £9 10s Id were passed for payment. Air A ates reported that the association had commenced the year with a credit balance, of £3l and should finish with £45 after trophv orders had heen paid. The credit balance was now £SO. £3 3s and £1 Is were voted the Palmerston North and Northern Clubs, respectively, as an expression of appreciation for the use of their courts.
