POLAR CLAIMS.

AMERICA’S STAKE. Received April 18, 11.30 a.m. WASHINGTON, April 17. It is understood that Admiral R. E. Byrd and Mr Lincoln Ellsworth have been asked to consult the Government concerning plans for an official expedition to the South Polar regions in order to “fasten down American claims to the potential resources of tile region, for which an international race is developing." A prominent member of the Government explained: “Sooner or later there must be a conference to settle the question of international claims in the region. Britain, Germany, France, Norway, and virtually every other nation arc claiming something. “The State Department has never recognised the claims, and we want to fasten down our jurisdiction and obtain all possible data on the matter.”
