EIRE’S OPINION

AVOIDANCE OF WAR.

CONFERENCE OF POWERS

APPEAL FOR UNITY. (United Press Association—l3y Electric Telegraph. —Copyright.) Received April 17, 11.25 a.m. LONDON, April 10.

Mr de Valera (Prime Minister of Eire) in a public speech at Clare, said it would appear that only the mercy of Providence could save Europe from a new war more terrible and more disastrous than that which broke out in 1914. He asked was it too late for the hundreds of millions of people wanting peace to demand a conference of the Powers before instead of after a war; was it possible for President Roosevelt’s request to be refused.

Mr do Valera added that a settlement after war would lie short-lived as the defeated nations would grimly bide their time to exact a harsh and iniquitous revenge. His Government’s policy was neutrality which could be attained only through strength. ft was necessary to prepare the defence to the limit of the country’s resources.

Mr de Valera appealed for national unity and more volunteers.
