THE DRUNKEN DRIVER “Ncm- I want to say a word about tlic ‘booze artist,’ as I call him,” said the Minister of Transport (Hon. _ R. Semple), in speaking at the official opening, on Saturday of the new Whirokino trestle bridge. “Any individual lias a right in this country to get drunk if lie wants to (but lie would not do it again if lie would have a look at himself), but he must ‘crawl up a gas pipe’ or go to bed. He has no right whatever to get into a highpowered car and turn it into an. infernal machine and turn himself into a potential murderer If he wants to commit suicide then he can do so, but he should go off somewhere and do it quietly. “Wo are determined to get him (the intoxicated motorist) well and truly fixed up.” declared the Minister with particular emphasis. “I hope that before many months are passed he will bo as scarce on our roads as the moa is in New Zealand.” ~ , In declaring the long trestle bridge open the Minister later expressed the hope that it would never be stained with the blood of an innocent victim of a motor accident.
