MANAWATU TROTS

CUP GOES TO CRUISER. FAVOUIUTES FARE BADLV. (By ’ •' ‘Square-Gaiter.”) Favourites fared badly on the first day of the Maiiawatu Trotting Club’s autumn meeting, on Saturday, only one, C'hudic, scoring. This was in the two-mile event for unhoppled trotters. 'The Nelson owner-trainer, L. F. Berkett, had three winners in Eoyalette, Tristan and Native Worry, and three seconds, with Tristan, Juliana and Wolcome Cuv. Three horses which were a little unlucky in their respective events were Tc Roto, Resistance and Purina.

There was a good attendance, and the weather was very favourable, except lor a light shower. The going was excellent, and, with big fields competing except in the last event, the racing was of a high standard, promising well for the concluding day on Wednesday.

The totalisator handled £11,379 10s, a decrease of £765 10s compared with the £12,145 for the single day fixture of last year, a result which, however, was very satisfactory under the circumstances.

The IVlanawatu Trotting Cup was won by the southerner Cruiser, who finished too strongly for the opposition after making a sharp run over the concluding stages. Mr J. A. Nash extended the congratulations of the club to Mr 0. 14. Hooper, the Rnkaia owner-driver of the winner. To Mr W. E. Stuffing (on behalf of the owner) Mrs YY . E. Mouldey, wife of the president, presented the English pewter tea set and tray, the president’s trophy, for the owner of the winning horse. The following are descriptions of events additional to those which appeared on Saturday: — ROMA GIRL SCORES.

Staying on solidly on the ience all file way after taking the lead as the field settled down, the Waikato mare Roma Girl had a nice win in the Pohangina Handicap. Resistance had to pull out from the fence to challenge her over the concluding stages, but she hung on well to win by half a length with Lynn Rev (whom Resistance passed in the straight) tiring to fill third place three lengths away. The placed trio, with Purina and Juliana, were the only ones left in it crossing the top where they had opened up a big gap on the others, but three and a-half furlongs from home Purina fell and effectively stopped .Juliana. Purina was going well at the time. Lynn Rev attended Roma Girl into the straight, with Resistance behind them and, though the latter had to leave the rails to make his run, Roma Girl won well. Otaua broke up at the start. Cha.rlie Chan moved off ooickly. but was soon in trouble down the hack. CRUISER WINS NARROWLY. Cruiser, who had won at Addington and Timaru, scored narrowly in the Maiiawatu Cup to win l>v a head from Loyal Direct, who was coupled with Shrewdie. Mazaire tried to make the pa.ee all the way and she led right up till the final furlong, where she weakened under pressure and was passed by Cruiser and Loyal Direct. The Man-o’-War gelding won well after coming with a sharp run over the final three furlongs. Treasure Bond was slow to settle down ad lost a lot of ground; consequently he did exceedingly well to finish ‘fourth. Olive King never got going and was hopelessly placed throughout. Mazaire. the favourite, was successfully challenged first by the Taranaki Cup winner Ace High, who ran past Shrewdie round the turn, where Bed Frontier was close up, and l>v Loyal Direct and Cruiser coming just behind, the last pair staying on best. TRAINER’S THIRD WINNER.

Tristan, after finishing; second to his stablemate, Loyalette earlier in the day, gave the Kelson owner-trainer L. F. Berkett his third winner of the day when he, won the Ladies’ Bracelet by a length from To Koto, who was unlucky. To Koto, who was second in the Wellington Stakes, showed speed and was lying a handy third until be took the lead half a mile from home. Tristan headed him in the straight and. cramped for room on the rails, he had to he pulled out at a critical stage of the running, finishing a good second. First Shake and Stepson were the pacemakers until caught by Te Koto. Stepson finished on a fair third and Petite, who came with a run on the outside entering the straight, was fourth, with Double Peter and Diltest close up. Oloverdale never got going, and the favourite, Accountant, was not doing his work right. LADY VASELYNE WINS DECISIVELY. Lady Vasclyne, a double winner at Greyinouth, had a good win in the Stewards’ Handicap. Lying in behind the pacemaker, Hottentot, nearly all the way, she put in a lightning challenge in the straight, and although Juliana came up to got almost on terms with her, she was going away again at the finish. Juliana had l>een stopped when going well in a nearlier race owing to Purina falling in front of her. Otaua again broke up at the staid and the favourite, Sans Pareil, went up in the air when the pace was being ■ clapped on going into the hack. Hottentot led into the straight from Lady Vaselyne, Juliana, Envious and Roadster, hut broke under pressure and finished well back. EASY FOR C HUD 10. C'hudic, although the margin was only half a length, had an easy win in the McDonald Handicap, never giving his supporters a moment’s anxiety, and he trotted well off his easier mark. C'hudic, a warm public fancy, was the first favourite of the day to score. C'hudic was always going easily in fourth place until he moved up oil the outside of Welcome Guy entering the straight, Sphinx still being in front, thereafter being the pacemaker all the, way. Sphinx weakened over the final pinch, where Welcome Guy had a momentary lapse, and Chudic went on to win. Sphinx hung on to be. a similar distance hack for third place, with All Bingen, who was always prominent, fourth. The douhle-gaited Gentleman Joe, who arrived too late to contest the Cup, was not, going right, and made several mistakes. LAST TO EFFIE PARRISH. Effio Parrish, who had winning form at Wanganui, and was second at Hawera. won the President’s Handicap n] 1 the way, easily being able to stall off a challenge at the finish by Loyal Direct, who had won over sprint distances at Thames and New Plymouth. Loyal Direct, who had finished a close second in the Manawatu Cup, was coupled with Shrewdie. Adversity, who had won a. maiden event at the Manawatu meeting two years ago, made up his ground fast off the back mark to ho a handy fourth until Bed Frontier went up fast at the turn for home. Adversity moved with him, but Red Fron-

tier was soon beaten. Adversity followed the locally-owned Elfio Parrish into the straight, but his early efforts then told on him, and he quickly weakened to be passed by Loyal Direct, who pursued the winner home. Rod Frontier was fourth.
