GOLF TOURNAMENT

NORTH ISLAND TITLE. DEFEAT OF HOLDER. Several interesting matches were witnessed in the second round of the North Island golf championship tournament at the Manawatu Golf Club’s links at Hokowhitu on Saturday and yesterday. 'the third and fourth rounds were productive of some surprises. R. H. Chiding (Hamilton) and D. H. Graham (Wellington) reached the final. Weather conditions remained perfect. J. ft. Barker (Wellington) produced some exceedingly fine putting to defeat K. S. Glendinning (Manawatu), whereas in this department of the game the latter failed to keep to form. His golf has not been ns good lately as at some other times but liis putting on Saturday could not stand up to the performance of Parker. 0. H. Williams (Manawatu) had an opportunity of defeating B. M. Silk (Wanganui) but failed to seize it when he took three putts on the last green owing to being short with one. Silk was 4 down at one period hut improved to become all square at the 17th. Silk was just short of the green, hut Williams was on and the hole was then halved. At the 19th Silk emerged the winner, 1 up.

The title-holder, P. G. F. Smith (Akarana) did not reproduce his play of the morning, when he went round in 72. His afternoon performance was 7b and the trouble lay in a had patch ol hooking (>f drives, for no particular reason. He had shown a tendency to that end in the morning, but in the afternoon both he and his partner 11. .1. Longstaff (Napier) wore well off the line of play at two holes. Smith eventually won, 3 and 2. SMITH ELIMINATED. rii the third round Smith was eliminated by D. H. Graham, 5 and 4. The pair were square at the second hole and Graham took the following two. r J’he next two were halved and at the turn, following a rim ol success, Graham was 5 up. 11 is figures were 37 and Smith’s 41. 'They halved the next pair of holes, and Smith then won Lagoon Hill (147 yards). Smith took 6 at the next (498 yards) and Graham 5. for the hitter to lie dormy 5. Graham was successful with a 12ft putt at the following hole for a birdie three and the match ended. B. M. Silk (Wanganui), against Mortland, was 2 down at the turn. Silk took the first hole of the inward journey and there then followed a succession of halves until Mortland won the 16th and 17th and thus took the match to eliminate the former New Zealand amateur champion. Glading and A. R. Kitto (Wanganui) were all square at the turn and the Waikato player won the next two holes. The following pair were halved so that wins at the 14th and loth holes gave Glading the match. J. B. Parker heat Horne only after the match had reached the 22nd hole. Parker, 1 up. lost the 18th and the next three were halved. THE SEMI-FINALS. . The semi-final between J. P. MortIsnd (Taihape) and Glading saw some fine golf. Glading went round in one over par figures—out in 36 and back in 38. Mortland went out in 38 but came hack in 37. Glading was 1 up at the turn and tho position was the same at the 11th. Lagoon Hill was halved and Mortland won the following hole, but Glading then took the following two and was thus 2 up. The next was halved and on the 17th Mortland reduced the other’s lead to 1 up, so that, with the halving of the last, Glading took the match. Graham ran out the winner against Parker, 2 and 1, although the latter was 2 up at the turn. The following hole saw him 3 lip, hut a birdie and then a bogey to Graham reduced this. The next hole was halved and over the following two Graham changed tho position to bo 1 up. Tho 16th was halved and another birdie at the 17th gave Graham the match, 2 and 1. The following are results of play on Saturday afternoon and over the week-end : NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. Second Round.
