MADRID FALLS
GENERAL FRANCO’S GAIN. RIVAL TROOPS FRATERNISE DISTRIBUTION OE FOOD. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received March 29, 19 a.m. LONDON, March 28. Madrid has surrendered, and according to Reuter’s Madrid correspondent the formal occupation of the city will commence at 5 p.m. A despatch from the British United Press Madrid representative states that Nationalist and Republican troops fraternised before the surrender, exchanging cigarettes, rations and newspapers. The Nationalists announce that 50 lorry-loads of food are being distributed in Madrid this afternoon. Thousands of Republicans left for Valencia during the night, including municipal employees. General Franco is continuing the offensive on the Toledo and Corboda fronts until he ascertains whether the surrender involves the 10 Republican provinces. A message from Madrid skates that Colonel Eduardo Lozas has been appointed military governor. A Valencia message says it is understood that the Republican forces in all sectors have been ordered to withdraw to avoid useless bloodshed.
