CONSTRUCTION OF BRIDGE. REQUEST TO COUNCIL. “A - subsidy is provided in the current estimates tor the renewal in concrete of Stewarts bridge, but plans have not yet been received from your council for approval,” stated a letter received by tlie Manawatu County Council, yesterday, from the Public Work’s Department engineer, Wellington, regarding the bridge on No. 00 -Mount Stewart highway. The letter added: “The temporary approaches to the existing bridge wheio construction is being carried out are definitely dangerous and may, at any time, be the cause of a serious accident. I shall lie glad, therefore, if you will take immediate steps to have the present approaches to the existing bridge improved to allow a safe passage lor traffic, and, at the same time, it is desired to receive the detailed plans of the new bridge for approval at the earliest possible date. As regards foiwarding the plans for approval, this would also apply to bridges which lequire renewal on your council s section of the Awahuri-Mangaweka mam highway.” The county engineer (Mr li. V. Rond) explained to the council that the plans were not complete. He had had great difficulty in obtaining material, hut had succeeded in getting some good second-hand stringers, a temporary bridge was being built which would lx l safe for traffic. The council decided to forward this report to the Public Work’s Department.
