STAKES INCREASED.
WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB. Per Press Association. WANGANUI, March 28. , The programme for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting shows an i increase in stakes of £565, making the total £4500. Of this £IOO is added to the Connolly and Empire Handicaps, and £SO each to the Grandstand Steeplechase, Purua Hack Hurdles, and open and hack sprints. Queen of Song was finishing on fourth after coming from the rear in the King George Handicap on the first day at Awapuni, She moved scratchily in het preliminary and, owing to soreness, was withdrawn on the second day. She remains in tho field for the Great Autumn Handicap, of Ij miles, at Ricearton. Peerless, who appears to bo the beet filly of her ago in Now Zealand, and raced well at Trontham and Awapuni, is also engaged in this event.
