VOLUNTARY SERVICE.
MR ATTLEE’S PLEA. APPEASEMENT POLICY FUTILEReceived March 25, 11.20 a.m. LONDON, March 24. The Labour leader (Mr C. R.’Attlee), in a public speech, said: “There is widespread agitation to introduce conscription. It is clear from the Ministers’ statements that they have no plans in the event of conscription utilising tho services of the masses. M e are facing a danger from the totalitarian Powers on an organised basis, refusing individual liberty and regimenting the community. We will not defeat tho menace by adopting their methods; we must develop to the utmost the spiring of voluntary service.” Mr Atlee added that the policy of unilateral appeasement had proved to be not only wrong but futile. It had brought Britain to the danger of war and weakened democracy throughout the world. Mr Attlee advocated a world conference to deal with the fundamental causes of war.
