FIELD DAY AT PAHIATUA

Rugby Park, Pahiatua, was the veuue of the fourth annual field day of .the Ballance and Mangatainoka Young Farmers’ Clubs, on Wednesday. Included in the large attendance were 24 young farmers from Taranaki, who are at present touring the North Island. Mr G. Cotter, chairman of the Mangatainoka Club, in opening the held day, welcomed the Taranaki young farmers. The programme consisted of a demonstration arranged by the Jersey Breeders’ Club, in which Mr T. Ranford, of Whakarongo, gave an explanatory lecture on points for the dairy breeder, illustrated by reference to a Jersey cow and bull lent by Mr A. R- Wylie (Nikau). There followed a tug-of-war between the Taranaki young farmers’ and the Ballance and Mangatainoka teams, this being won twice by the visitors. Before the departure of the Taranaki contingent, their president (Mr A. Johnson) expressed thanks to the local clubs for arranging the field day. He also expressed the gratitude of the Taranaki Club to Mr Ranlord for his interesting demonstration. Mr G. Cotter suitably replied. A demonstration on a diseased sheep (given by Mr A. Hancock) was conducted by Mr E. E. Elpliiek, M.R.C.V.S., of the Department of Agriculture, Palmerston North. The next lecture was on “Feed Rations for Pigs,” the speaker using for demonstration ourposes a pig lent by Mr R. A. Burke* Mr E. P. Nielsen, supervisor of the Pig Recording Council, was the speaker. The presentation of the cups and medals won by members of the clubs at the Pahiatua Show was made. Mr James, president of the W airarapa District Council of the Young it armers’ Clubs, in making the presentation, commended the show committee tor arranging the stock judging competitions, and congratulated the winners heartily. He presented the following cuiks and medals : Sheep judging (Mr A. Sinclair’s Cup).—Mr H. Wilton. Air H. Cotter’s medal; Air W. Holdaway; Air H R. Wilton’s medal, Air M. Ross; Mr C. H. Wilton’s medal. Air 1. WBremner. (These four members ot the Ballance Club tied for first in the competition, Air Wilton winning in the draw, the three medals being presented for the occasion.) , Jersey classes (Air J. H. Bremner s Cup).—Air R. Waldman (Ballance). Air G. Cotter introduced Air S. Freeman, secretarv for the Young Farmers’ Clubs throughout New Zealand. Air Freeman said how glad he was to have an opportunity of renewing acquaintance with the district, and how encouraging it was to see such a gathering. These were two good, strong clubs, and there see met to be no fear of that part of the country going back. Air Cotier expressed thanks on behalf of the Ballance and Mangatainoka Clubs to the demonstrators. He thanked the AAoodville Jersey Breeders’ Club, who had provided ' the demonstration free; Alessrs A. R. Wylie, A. Hancok and R. A. Burke for the loan of stock, and the Rugby Union for the use ot the ground. Mr Wylie replied. The meeting concluded with a brier sports gathering, results being as fol--75 yards sprint.—A.
