MEMEL’S ABSORPTION. EXPECTED IN BERLIN. ACTIVITY AT KAUNAS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received March 22, 9.45 a.m. LONDON, March 21. The Exchange Telegraph’s Berlin correspondent says that an announcement of Memel’s absorption can be expected at any moment. A Kaunas (Kovno) report says that instead of a full secret session, Parliamentary committees met to discuss the European situation followed by the Council of Ministers, which released the people of Memel from military service. BRITAIN’S CLOSE WATCH. In reply to a question in the House of Commons, Mr R. A. Butler (Undersecretary for .Foreign Affairs) said the position in Memel was being closely watched. An emergency meeting of the Diet was summoned by telephone. The sitting lasted tor over two hours- There has been no announcement as to the result, hut proposals are reported to have been submitted for the return of Memel to Germany. It is stated that its return will be settled between Herr von Kibbentrop (German Foreign Minister) and the Lithuanian Minister. Dr Neumann states that lie expects Lithuania to surrender Memel at a very early date, says a Mcmol report.
