MAIITON, March 21. At the annual meeting of the Marton branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union Mr A. C. Birch presided. The report and balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £ls 12s 9d, was read and adopted. Mr F. tt. 11. Brice congratulated the president on his comprehensive report. The election of officers resulted: —President, Mr A. C. Birch; vice presidents, Messrs H. G. Stewart and It. T. Kelsey; secretary and treasurer, Mr J. li. S. Duckling; representative of Chamber of Commerce, Mr H. H. Richardson; committee, Messrs J. H. Harris, D. A. Cameron, J. H. Tate, P. Friedrich, J. Griffin, A. Morrison, W. G. Aitken, G. Lovelock; representative to Chamber of Commerce, Mr J. B. S. Dudding: lion, auditor, Mr R. Cochran. Mr K. Armstrong (Wanganui provincial secretary) addressed the meeting on the question of price-fixing of the road cartage of live-stock and wool. Mr R. O. Montgomerie, president of the Makirikiri branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, spoke on the finance ami organisation of the union. In the recent sports competition for 1 the Morris Shield, the final figures show a very interesting result. Three schools, Mount View, Convent, and Parewanui, scored an equal number of points, and it has been agreed that each school will hold the trophy for four months. It was announced on the day of the sports that Convent and Mount View were equal with points, l’arcwanui improved its position on a recount. ' Medals were awarded to tlie following boys and girls who obtained the highest individual scores in each of the competitions :—Peace Shield (A grade) : Boy champion, Mcrvyn Whale (Marton ! Junction); girl champion, Merle Cairncross (D.H.S.) and Dawn Webb (Marton Junction, equal. Morris Shield (B grade) : Boy champion, J. Warbrick (Parewanui) ; girl champion, Patsy Oates (Convent). First-class certificates were awarded to each of the following who gained more than eight points: Douglas Whitfield (Mount View), Patsy Green (Putorino), Maurice Tate (Turakina), Donald Mitchell (Parewanui). A hook prize was awarded to Betty McLean (South Makirikiri) for a very meritorious performance, she being only a quarter-point behind the winner of the medal. By a margin of 21 runs the Marton Cricket Club beat Porewa in a match on Saturday. Marion made 135 (Smith 32, Corballis 23, Birch 19, A. 1). Fullerton-Smith IS; Arkwright 3 for 17). Porewa iost nine wickets for 114 (Parkinson 44, A. Fullerton-Smith 23; Openshaav 3 for 10). Having first use of the bat, Taihape compiled 196 (Revcll 72. Whittle '45, Becker 22) against Old Boys, who at the call of time had six wickets down for 124 (Jolly 35, Wysocki 24, Klitschcr 23; Becker 2 for 4). The monthly meeting of the Marion branch of the Plunket Society was presided over by Mrs Tidy. A welcome was extended to Mrs B. Marshall, who lias recently joined the committee. The Dominion president wrote regarding the appointment- of Dr Helen Deem as medical adviser to the council. Senior Plunket Nurse Ogden, who is to take charge of the society’s court at the Centennial Exhibition, will shortly visit the various branches. The Dunedin branch acknowledged the donation forwarded by the branch to the Truhy King-Harris Hospital fund. During Miss Richmond’s absence on holiday, Miss Gorrie was relieving nurse, and she reported that the general health of babies in the district was satisfactory.
