BOROUGH COUNCIL. At a meeting of the Pahiatua Borough Ooiinei! the Mayor (Mr S. T\. Skldells) gave a comprehensive report on the matters discussed at the, Municipal Conference, which he attended. PERSONAL. Mr and Mrs C, Smith, of the King Country, were staying with Mr and Mrs M. llowat, of Koiiiimi. Mr and Mrs Bryant. of Canterbury, are the guests of Airs Barnett, of Tiranmca Road. Mr and Mrs Urwin. of Bluff, have been the guests of Dr and Mrs Paterson, of Main Street. Mrs Boyens. of Sedcole Street, has been visiting Wellington. Miss K. Maboy. of Ilanma, who has been an inmate of a Wellington hospital, has now recovered. Mr John Spillanc, who for many years was an hotelkeeper in Pahiatua, passed away in Auckland recently at the advanced age of 91 years. CAR CAPSIZES. A ont. on the hack was received by Mr IT. Eagle, farmhand, of Nireaha, when the ear lie was driving skidded and capsized on Monday evening. lie was admitted to the Pahiatua Hospital. Mr 1). A. Payne, also of Nireaha. who was a passenger in tlic car, was uninjured, 'file car was extensively damaged. CENTENNIAL CLOCK. Tn reply to (he Pahiatua Borough Council's inquiry as to whether the Public Works Department had any objection to the proposed erection of the Centennial memorial clock at the intersection of the town squares, notification was received at a meeting of ihe council that it was not considered advisable to restrict the visibility of intersect ions, especially in the shopping area, any more than at present.
It was pointed out that angle parking opposite the main shops would soon have to ho discontinued so that any structure such as that suggested should be placed well away from any intersection. The Mayor said that the erection of a clock on ihe proposed site was now beside the point, and it had to be decided whether it was advisable to erect the clock in the flagpole square. The architect had estimated the cost to be £950 and £175 for the actual clock. After a discussion the matter lapsed. URBAN FARM ROLL. Thc Department of Internal Affairs wrote to the Borough Council giving information that the procedure in connection with the preparation of a now farmland list (under the Farm Land Rating Act. 1932) for the borough of Pahiatua, owing to the farm-land roll expiring through the passage of time, was the santo as that when preparing the first farmland list. The letter further gave the information that the farm-land, at present under consideration, would come into force on April 1. 1940. 'Hie Mayor said that the farmers were not going to got reliof during this year, and this meant that the town clerk would have to go through the same procedure as last year in compiling the urban farm roll.
