AWAPUNI TRACK

TRIALS FOR MANAWATU. ROYAL CHIEF ARRIVES. SUBMISSION’S GOOD GALLOP. (By “Spectator.”) Though most of the horses had been racing at the Trentham meeting, there was plenty of activity on the Awapuni track this morning, when candidates for the Manawatu autumn meeting, which opens on Friday. underwent their semi-final trials. The going on the course proper, where the flags were 40ft. out, was firm, and the plough was in good order, but times generally were not fast, indicating restricted work for the most part.

A fall of rain overnight has eased the track considerably and it should be in perfect order for the meeting. Southern horses have already put in an appearance. Royal Chief (who will be piloted in the Awapuni Gold Cup by B. 11. Morris.), Settlement and Prudent Prince, a Riccarlon trio, were all out early, but were confined to paeework. They will gallop on Thursday morning. The Lord Quex gelding Prudent Prince claims an engagement in the Sires’ Produce Stakes on the second day, and all the team look exceptionally well. Submission, Entail and Homily, who nr present W. Rayner’s contingent from Wanganui, also put in an appearance, and later the Taranaki pair, Deficit and Windsor Chief, arrived, the latter two being worked after breakfast. Homily and Entail were allotted paeework, but Submission figured in a very useful work-out. With C. G. Goulsbro in the saddle, Submission, who looks very fit, had an easy task in accounting for Newbury Queen (Broughton) and La Bru (Tattcrsall) over half a mile run in 54scc. Submission was always travelling very smoothly, and though Newbury Queen was within a neck of her at the finish of the gallop, Submission had plenty in reserve. La Bru was some lengths behind. She has not boon putting her former dash into her work lately, but raced well enough at Wanganui. Submission should run a great race in the Stakes on the second day. BEST SIX FURLONGS. White Gold (Ireland), as usual, showed plenty of speed and, on the plough, did the fastest six furlongs of the morning in 1.19. Jf she could only be persuaded to reproduce her track work always in her races she would be hard to beat. T hrasos (Anderson) was not a great deal of u<se to The Crooner (Broughton), who ran home very easily over the last five of seven furlongs in 1.9. Copy Cat (Broughton), accompanied b> Verey Lights, ran half a mile in 54i&ec. Copy Cat looks very well. Laughing Lass, who nearly brought off a surprise in the Thompson Handicap at Trentham, did three-quarter pace work and was then speeded up over the last three furlongs. Oratory, who went well in the Challenge Stakes at Trentham, and will run in the Awapuni Gold Cup, did useful exercibe. She will probably be retired to the stud after the Manawatu meeting. Diamond Cutter (Tattcrsall) was going very nicely over half a mile in 56j6ce. He seems to have freshened up again, and always gallops well in this condition. Colonel Bogey (Broughton) and Snigger (Tattcrsall) ran the last five of six furlongs in 1.9. Colonel Bogey has built up a grea 1 deal of late. Both The Bigot ami Ecstatic did light exercise, and Bumble and Old Surrey did useful paeework. J ed I’rior anil his stablemate. a Colossus gelding, covered half a mile in 54scc on tlie plough. I’ae do Cheval (Tattcrsall) and Mvarion (Hibbcrd) slipped over the last throe of four furlong- in 41 3-s?or Cmldlcr and Tidal Gift got to the end of five furlongs on the plough in 1 BEAUI’ARTIR VERY KIT. Bcaupartir, who is a hardy sort. and seems to thrive on galoping, showed that his race in the New Zealand ,St. Legcr had not unduly troubled him by the good style in which lie bit out over seven furlongs. With Ireland in the saddle, he was going easily throughout the distance with Royal Choice (Tattcrsall) for a companion. The latter went well, but Bcaupartir could have taken his measure with ease at any stage of tlie journey. Wildflowcr (Stewart) and Sudan I (Broughton) ran five furlongs on the plough in 1.6. ... Dainty Sue, who will be ridden in the King George Handicap by the Waikato apprentice 0. ,1. Evans if ho is a\affably, went pleasingly over seven furlongs in 1.39. Broughton was in the saddle.

(‘orroborec (Stewarl} was sent over a ruffe, anti was picked un by Old Bill (Goulsbro) at tlie six furlongs post. They ran tlie distance from there to the finisli in 1.22.

Aurora's Btar (Tcmpcrton) covered six furlongs in 1.6. Millainent (Broughton) and Chevy Chase (Ireland) clashed over three furlongs in llpec. T) DEW A ITER FRESHENED UP.

Booking bettor than ever he has done, the Avondale Cup winner Tidewaiter did two rounds of work, finishing; down the straight at three-quarter pace. He has done well in his spoil since Christmas, and is being sharpened up a little in his work now that the tracks are likely to become softer, but he has no immediate engagements. Claseform, his stablcmatc, is also being worked. Strolling, who is reported to have given some very’ satisfactory schooling displays with Warchi, did a strong gallon. Roth have hurdles engagements at the Manawatn meeting. It will lie Strolling's first, start for some time. He is to race on the fiat the first day. Deflation is enjoying a lot-np. He has had seven starts this season for one third (to Beanlivro and Nora Gregor), and on several other occasions has just missed a minor placing. Sporting Gift has recovered from the soreness which has troubled him of late, and was hack on the track again to-day. He has no immediate engagements. Israel (Kanuke) and the two-vcar-old Defoe—Switch On filly (Tattorsall) were sprinted home together from the three furlongs post. Inch Kei'.h is the name claimed for a Muskeloon —Tallaluh three-vear-old filly who is undergoing education on the track. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS.
