TAKARO.

PROGRESSIVE ASSOCIATION. The monthly meeting of the general committee of the Takaro Progressive Association was held at the residence of Mrs AV. Ratcliffe, those present being: Messrs E. H. Smith (chairman), J. Wass, W. Ratcliffe, P. G. Brookie and J. H. Crihb (hon. secretary), Mesdames J. AVass, R. Packer and G. Foster. An apology for absence was received from Mr E. B. Borham. , Arising from the minutes of the previous meeting regarding the Jamieson Cup competition, the chairman said it was pleasing to note that even under 1 the adverse weather conditions the 1 district as a whole bore a well-kept look. Tt was decided to inform Mr Jamieson that the cup would Ik? presented to the winner at the annual general meeting of the association, which is held in April. Regarding the children’s party, which was held in the form of a picnic at the Takaro Park, the chairman said there was no doubt about the success of this function. Seeking the assistance of the association in the matter of forming a Scout committee for the district, Scouter L. Simpson explained the position as it stood at present in regard to the district’s Scout troop. He had in his charge ten Scouts which was the maximum number allowed; with an assistant this number could be considerably increased. His chief difficulty at present w;rs the need of a committee to conduct the affairs of the Scouts. He had interviewed the parents and residents with a view to forming a committee, hut had met with little success in this direction. It was his intention if possible to take the troop to the Centennial Exhibition. This could he done only with the help of a committee. The equipment of the Scouts at the moment was at a very low ebb. He was not so much concerned alxmt this, however, as it could he built up, what really discouraged him most was the seeming lack of interest on the pa.rt of residents. He felt that with a committee to help him a first-class troop could he built up. He would be indebted to the association for any help along the lines of forming such a committee. Discussing the matter later, it was pointed out that a Scout troop was founded by the association some years ago, which developed into one of the finest and best equipped troops in Palmerston North. It was a pity that a movement of this nature, which had such far-reaching beneficial results to I the average l>oy, should have boon allowed to drift, for the want of a little help, it was stated. It was decided to advise Mr Simpson that the association would make an appeal at its annual general meeting in the matter of assisting in the formation of a scout- committee. It was noted with pleasure that the tar-sealing programme to he carried out in this district during the current financial year had bben started. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr and Mrs Ratcliffe for the use of their residence for the meeting, also to the chairman.
