VETERANS AT PLAY

ANNUAL TOURNAMENT.

The .annual veterans’ bowling tournament (for players over 65 years of age) was held on the Manawatu Club’s green to-day under the auspices of the Manawatu Bowling Centre. Eleven rinks participated, absentees from the original entries being Levin and Bulls, the Latter, however, having made arrangements for a Manawatu rink to •substitute for them. When the players assembled' at 9, o’clock they were welcomed to the green by Mr H. Preece (president of the Manawatu Club), while later Mr J A. Nash (president of the Manawatu Centre) also extended them a welcome. Mr Nash said lie hoped that the players would have a pleasant day renewing old friendships, and he expressed gratification that veterans’ tournaments were becoming increasingly popular. Six games of eight heads each were played. SECOND ROUND. O'Shea (Terrace End) 14 v. Oxenham (Manawatu) 4; Curry (AVoodville) 8 v. Hunter (Pahiatua) 5; Robinson (Northern) won from Levin by default ; Hay (Palmerston North) 9 v. Pittman (Oroua) 7 ; Ball (Palmerston North) 15 v. Russell (Takaro) 2; Aitken (Oroua) 9 v. Kershaw (Northern) 5. THIRD BOUND. Kershaw 11 v. Bussell 4; Hay 16 v. Robinson 2; O’Shea 10 v. Ball 2; Curry 7 v. Oxenham 5; Hunter 14 v. Pittman 4; Aitken won from Levin by default. Curry, O’Shea and Aitken are leading with three wins each. VISIT TO AVELLINGTON. Eighty bowlers, representative of the Manawatu Centre, will visit AA’ellington to-morrow for the annual intercentre match. In the morning, the Manawatu players will divide into parties of four rinks each and will play friendly matches on five AA’e'lington greens, while the afternoon will he given over to the centre match. In the past, it was customary to send "fixture lias become so popular that this ve.'i.r 20 rinks are being sent. 6 VER-THE-R ANG E VIA TCH. The annual over-the-range match, always a popular fixture, will be played at Dannevirke on March 18. The following clubs have beep invited by the centre‘to provide one rink each: —Palmerston North, Manawatu. Hokowhitu. Northern. Takaro. Terrace End, Oroua and Feilding. The opposition will be provided by Dannevirke. Pahiatua, AA'oodville and Eketahunn rinks. EASTER FOURS TOURNEY.

Arrangements for the Manawiatu Bowling Centre’s Easter fours tourney are already well in hand, entries having been solicited from clubs over a wide area. At the pairs tourney at New Year the entries were a record, and it is anticipated that the fours tournament will also attract record support.

~ ROTORUA TOURNEY. The Rotorua Bowling Club’s pairs tournament opened yesterday in fine weather. The Palmerston North pair, J. C. A’oung and K. McDonald (Northern) won their first round match, defeating Mavson (Grey Lynn), 25—18.
