ROADWAY SURFACES

SATISFACTORY EXPERIMENT. Resurfacing of two sections of roadway between Te Awe Awe Street and Park Road and between College Street and Ferguson Street, in Fitzlierbert Avenue, a total length ol 41 chains, with a special preparation was authorised by the City Council, last evening, and it decided that provision he made in the estimates for the ensuing year for the treatment of Rangitikei Street in similar manner. This action has followed the laying of a recent experimental section in Fitzherbert avenue. “Since the last council meeting,” reported the engineer (Mr J. R. Hughes), “a demonstration was carried out on a portion of Fitzherbert Avenue between Park Road and College Street. The work was carried out by the company concerned and the pre-mixed material supplied by them from their recently established plant at the river end of Albert Street. The resultant surface is very satisfactory and time will show the wearing quality of the mixture. Tt is claimed by the manufacturers that this particular plant mix provides a non-skid, nonglare, noiseless and vibrationless surface at a cost a little above that of the customary seal coat. The cost actually works out at 6d per square yard above that of ordinary maintenance work, and I would recommend that further work he carried out. The extra cost will be about £l5O, hut most of this will come into next year’s estimates.”
