LIBRARY FOR WEST END.

SUGGESTION TO GOVERNMENT. | STATE HOUSING AREA. The Palmerston North City Council decided, last evening, to make representations, through the member for the district (Mr J. Hodgens), to the State Housing Department for provision to be made in the proposed community hall in the State housing block for a senior and junior library. The matter came forward in the form of a recommendation from the librarian (Air H. Greenwood). “In view of the large number of new bouses that are being built by tho State, with a conservative estimate that at least 1000 people will be resident in the houses as well as the present number of .residents in the West End district, some consideration should he given to the provision of a library in the near future,” he said. “The State Housing Department has made provision for the erection of a community hall, and I would suggest that before the plans of the hall are completed a recommendation be made to the department that, when building the hall, they- provide suitable accommodation for - a library which would meet the- needs of the residents of the district. After consultation with the town clerk, T interviewed the local inspector of the department and ho was very favourably impressed with the suggestion. I understand that he has already placed the suggestion before the department in Wellington, and lie recommends that, if tho council are in favour of the proposal, a letter he sent to the Government stating what the council are prepared to do in the matter. My own view is that the Government should provide the building and that the council provide the books and ! service. Provision should be made for a senior and junior department in the . library.”
