UNANIMITY ON URGENCY
EXTENSIVE PROGRAMME

The Prime Minister (Mr J. A. Lyons), in a national broadcast, said: “As long as the present disturbed state of international relations persists, Australia will be in a position of danger. Our safety can best be guaranteed by continuing as we are doing with an extensive defence programme. “If the democracies stand fast and are united in their policy of rearmament to resist aggression, there is hope for the world.” Mr Heft'ron, the Leader of the State Labour Party, in his first public statement on defence, said lie- supported tho proposed largo Federal expenditure on defence, provided it was properly directed. The New South Wales State Government has advised the military authorities that it is willing to reorganise its programme of public works in order to begin the construction of railways, roads and other urgent military works.
