TRADES UNION PICNIC

FIXTURE AT ASHHURST. EIGHT THOUSAND PRESENT. The annual trades union picnic was held on the Asliliurst racecourse yesterday, there being in the vicinity of 8000 people present despite rather unpleasant weather conditions earlier in the day. Special trains ran at frequent intervals from the city, while there were also trains from Fed ding, Levin, Foxton and Woodville. Considerable enterprise was displayed by the officials, and young and old were catered for in lavish manner. Ice-cream, sweets and toys were distributed free to the children, while the various athletic events carried handsome trophies donated by local business people. Among those present were Mrs C‘. Stewart, M.P., (Wellington), and Mr and Mrs C. G. Sorimgeour. Mrs Stewart and Mr Sorimgeour pre-1 sonted the principal trophies and con- I gratulated the organisers on the out- j standing success of the picnic. One of the features of the day was the draught horse derby, in which four local jockeys participated. The journey was over a quarter ot a mile, the idea being that the riders dismount 20 yards from the post and finish on foot. The winner was YV. E. Pine, with N, Trillo second, J. Chaplin third and C. Broughton fourth. The event created considerable amusement. Donkey races, a chase for the greasy pig and a burlesque beauty contest added to the enjoyment. During the afternoon a demonstration of first-aid work was given by members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade. The officials wore as follow :—President, Mr R, Lee; vice-president, Air L. Nevvdick; host and hostess, Hon. Mark Briggs and Mrs Briggs; secretary and organiser, Mr G. R. Murphy ; conveners of committees, Messrs J. Savage (transit). ,1. McKenzie (gate).
