CONDITIONS QUIET.

STOCKS AND SHARES. THE WEEK’S TRADING. Quiet conditions ruled in the New Zealand stock and share markets last week ; the main source of interest being in Government stocks. Business was dull and the turnover was much about the same as for recent weeks. A few New Zealand shares were inclined to firm, but others were weak. Australian shares were quiet and steady, prices generally maintaining their premium on those ruling in Sydney and Melbourne. Most Government stocks were, in keen demand at firm rates, but the prices offered attracted few sellors. . Most of the business reported was in small parcels, the 4 per cent issues being the most freely traded. The 3 per cent, 1939 41, advanced to business at £96 10s. lhe 4 per cent, 1949-52, sold at £IOO ss, and the 1943-46 and 1946-49 maturities sold at £IOO, all inclusive of accrued interest. A half-year’s interest on the 1943-46’s was paid on February 15. Dealings in local body debentures were freer, but were confined mainly to Auckland issues, prices being generally firm. Bank of New Zealand shares accounted for most of the business in bank issues, which, otherwise, were dull. Bank of New Zealand ordinaries were traded freely at firmer rates advancing from 38s 9d to 39s 3d, with one sale at 39s sd. Commercial of Australia ordinaries recovered from 15a 8d to 15s lid. New South Wales sold unchanged at £3O 10s. G'ommencial of Sydney were done at £2O 10s, and Union at £8" 4s to £8 ss. Insurance shares were a little firmer, but business was inactive. National improved from 15s lOd to 16s, Now Zealand from 53s 3d to 53s 6d, and South British from 44s to 44s 3d. Queensland had a sale at 60s 6d, and Standard were firmer at 51s 9d to 525. There was little doing in financials, which were neglected throughout the week. Goldsbgrough Mort sold at 27s 6d, and New Zoaland Guarantee Corporation at 4s 4d. A fair assortment of industrial shares changed hands at prices showing minor changes. Breweries were quiet and other Now Zealand issues were irregular. Woollen and textile shares were firmr, Wellington Woollen ordinaries advancing to 97s 6d. Kaiapoi sold at from 12s 2d to 12a 3d. Wilsons Cement at 15s lOd, and Milbum Lime at 34s were unchanged, but Consolidated Brick eased from 9s lid to 8s lid. Alloy Steel (N.Z.) sold at 225, and Reid Rubber at 235. Now Zealand Drug were steady at 655. Union Oil sold at 21s to 20s 9d.

Australian industrial issues were mostly steady, with a firmer tendency. Australian Glass sold at £5 14s, and Broken Hill Proprietary to 57s 10d-. British Tobacco improved to s£s, Colonial Sugar at £49, and Morts Dock to 15s Id. Other sales included Felt and Textiles at 33s 6d, Associated Newspapers at 21s 3d, Dunlop Perdriau at 21s 6d, General Industries 19s 3d, Hume Pipe 19s 6d to 19s 9d, Imperial Chemical prof. 23e 7d to 23s 3d, Mauri Bros., 71s 9d. United Provision 7s 6d, and Wilcox MolTlin 5s 9d to 5s lOd. The weakness in the London metals market was responsible for the neglect of Australian metal companies’ shares, which were easier where sold. Tiro Woolworths issues were active during the week. Tho Sydney shares touched 24s 4d, but eased later to 23s 7d. Woolworths (N.Z.) sold at from 18s to 17s 9d. G. J. Coles were about firm. Taranaki Oil were easier on the week and a small volume of business was done in gold-mining issues SATURDAY’S QUOTATIONS.
