MANAWATU TROTTING CLUB.

MATINEE MEETING. POPULAR ATTRACTION. Held on the club’s training track in Fitzroy Street, on Saturday afternoon, the annual matinee meeting of' the Manawatu Trotting Club attracted an attendance of about five hundred people, who were treated to an interesting programme. The fields were small, but the racing was keen and performances of a high standard were witnessed. _ j Considerable interest was taken in the appearance of the renowned trot- , ter Harold Logan, who contested the* final event. This well-known performer | has not raced prominently for some time and was not in form, but his easy style appealed to the public and the veteran received a great ovation. It was Harold Logan’s last public appearance as he is going into wellearned retirement. ;

The officials were as follow.—Judge, Mr W. Mouldey; assistant-judge, Mr W. Douglas; starter, Mr D. Stevens; assistant-starter, Mr E. F. Thwaites; lap steward, Mr A. Bloomfield; stewards, Messrs E. B. Vine, H. Guy, H. Mouldey, J. Blummont, L. G. Rieger, F. Smith and E. G. Dobson; secretary and announcer, Mr A. H. Manson. An apology for absence was received from the patron of the club, Mr J. Hodgens, M.P., now on his way to Australia, who intimated that he had every confidence that the club would secure additional permits in the very near future. At the end of the meeting trophies were presented by the president (Mr W. Mouldey). who thanked the owners and trainers for supporting the fixture and thus assisting to further popularise the sport in Palmerston North. Details of the events are as follow: MATINEE HANDICAP, of H miles; 3.5 class. GATE PAH, Mr W. A. Price’s b m, by Azelzion—Little Jewell, aged, scr. (A. Berryman) 1 GOLDEN STAR. Mr A. F. Uddall’s ch g, 6vrs, scr. (B. Liddell) 2 SHORT WAVE. Mr E. Christensen’s b g, syrs, scr. (A. F. Liddall) ... 3 The only starters. Half a length; 10 lengths. Gate Pah led all the way but Golden Star was always handy and, coming fast in the straight, almost overhauled the winner in an exciting finish. Short Wave broke twice and never hsd a chance. FITZROY HANDICAP, of U miles; 3.49 class.' BLACK NATIVE. Mr M. D. Quinn’s blk g, by Native King—-Black Ada, aged, 12yds bhd. (J. Flanagan) ... 1 NATIVE MAID. Mr A. G. Farland’s . b m, aged, scr. Mayo), Amy Etawah 48yds. bhd. (Flood). A head; two lengths. Black Native went to the front at the start and led all the way, with Native Maid never more than two lengths back. Big Kauri picked up a great deal of ground ; as a matter of fact, after an extra lap raced in error, the upstanding brown gelding was in front. Nothing else had a chance. MANAWATU HANDICAP, of two miles: 4.43 class, EFFIE PARRISH, Miss E. Hinds’s b m, by Guy Parrish—Ladv Effie, 5 yrs,, 36.yds. bhd. (B. Flood) 1 ACTIVITY. Mr J. Flanagan’s b m, aged. 48yds bhd. (Flanagan) 2 TAN JOHN. Mr W. Heginbotham’s ch g, aged. 12yds bhd (Heginbotham) 3 The only starters. A length; two lengths. Tan John led for half the distance, but he was overhauled by Effie Parrisfi and finally by Activity. The finish was an exciting one, Effie Parrish just holding of! a strong challenge from Activity. MEMBERS’ HANDICAP, of one mile and a half. 3.43 class. GOLDEN STAR. Mr A. F. Liddall’s ch g, by Worthy Bingen—Gold Girl, 6yrs, scr (A. F. Liddall) 1 GATE PAH. Mr W. A. Price’s b in, aged, scr (Berryman) 2 The only starters. Won by a length. The pair jogged along together until the entrance to the straight. In a close finish Golden Star turned the tables on Gate Pah, winner of tho first event. PALMERSTON HANDICAP, of two miles. 5.2 class. BIG KAURI, Mr J. T. Hill’s b g, by Worthy Bingen—Lady Haldane, aged, 96yds bhd (Hill) 1 BLACK NATIVE. Mr M. D. Quinn’s blk g, aged, 12vds bhd (Flanagan) 2 REDMOND’S PRIDE, Mr W. Heginbotham’s ch g, syrs, scr (Heginbotham) 3 Also started: Amy Etawah 12vds bhd (Flood). Half a length; five lengths. Black Native soon overhauled Redmond’s Pride, and Big Kauri gained a great deal of ground in the first two laps. Black Native was two lengths ahead of Big Kauri entering the straight for the run home, and although the latter challenged strongly he seemed to have no chance, until Black Native broke ten yards from the post and lost the decision. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP, of one and a half miles 2.57 class. EFFIE PARRISH,. Miss E. Hinds’s b m, by Guy Parrish—Lady Effie, syrs, 24yds bhd (Flood) 1 ACTIVITY, Mr ,T. Harold Logan had not raced for some time and he was never pushed. Effie Parrish scored her second win in a. close finish with Activity. Redmond’s Pride had no chance and Harold Logan was well back.
