DUCE’S ESCAPE
SHOT AT BODYGUARD. INCIDENT NEAR HOME. LOITERER ARRESTED. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received February 18, 10.5 a.in. LONDON, Eeb. 17. The British United Press Rome correspondent says that Signor Mussolini escaped assassination on Wednesday when an attacker shot at his bodyguard in front of the Duce’s residence in the Villa Torlonia as Signor Mussolini was departing for the Palazzo Venezia.
It is reported that the bodyguard challenged a loiterer at the main gateway, whereupon the stranger fired a revolver through his coat, wounding the guard in the stomach. Signor Mussolini rushed up as detectives and members of his household staff were arresting the man. The police are reported to have ascertained that the man was released from an asylum last week and was still carrying his certifying papers.
