LADY DURST WINS.

FIRST DAY AT WOODVILLE. SPRINT TO MITTIE. RED CAT’S SUCCESS. (By “Spectator.”) Features of the first day of the Woodvilie District Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday were the repeat successes of Mataroa and Rowana, each of whom had scored at their last starts on the second day at Pahiatua. Red Cat, who won the last race, has now won on each of her three visits to Woodvilie, and is out of hack class. Lady Furst, who has now won in seven out of nine starts, showed her brilliance by annexing the Woodvilie Handicap from Dungarvan, who made a great effort but was feeling bis weight at the finish. Lady Furst won well, but was receiving 151 b from Dungarvan, who is going to take a prominent part in big middle distance handicaps this season. Lady Furst should be a formidable opponent for the northerners in the lierries Memorial Handicap at To Aroha next week.

Mataroa, who changed hands last

eek, when he was acquired by Mr A. H. Burt, the former well-known horseman, now of Bulls, succeeded at his first start for his new’ owner when he annexed the Oringi Highweight, having won a similar class of event at Pahiatua in his last start. He is greatly improved, and won rather easily.

Mittie, the favourite, in taking the open sprint, added to her excellent record of successes at Feilding, Levin and Marion this season Vascones, who has had seconds to her credit at Marion and Wellington, opened her winning account at. last when she won the Sapling Stakes from end to end, but she was assisted by the fact that she gained several lengths in the jump out, where most of the field suffered badly.' Nevertheless, the Awapuni youngster showed that she has improved. There was an inquiry into alleged interference by Twilight Song with Dancing Flame in the Oringi Highweight. It was held that there had been interference, and W. G. Grindlav. the rider of Twilight Song, was suspended for two months. An inquiry was also held into interference by Old Bill in the finish of the Ivumeroa Handicap, the explanation of the jockey, G. R. Tattersall, being accepted. There was a very large attendance of the public, and the track was in perfect order. The totalisator handled f'10,(J56 10s, compared with £10.992 10s for the second day of the 1937 meeting, which was a Monday, and 013,257 10s on the first day, which was a Saturday. There was no autumn meeting last year. HALLEY’S MAIDEN PLATE. Halley, who had previously shown form on the Woodvilie track, where he was second at the spring meeting, had a decisive win in the Maiden Plate, and paid quite a good price considering his promising earlier showings. Brazil, the favourite, though first out of the barrier, was soon off his balance and dropped right back to fail badlv. He eventually finished seventh.

Parian took charge as soon as the field settled down and, for a horse having his first start, the Vaals gelding ran an excellent race to lead to the straight from Halley, who then headed him off and had the race won a furlong from home. Cuisinier, who was three lengths back second, came with a late run and confirmed the improvement she has made of late. Prediction, who filled third place, was

always handy. Barabbas was fourth, and as it was liis first start for 2-J----months he should soon do better. Parian was fifth, followed by Cherry Picker, another novice. Cnddler showed up early, but did not finish on well. EASY WIN FOR MATAROA.

Mataroa, who had won at Pahiatua and is one of the most improved highweight horses in commission in the province, won the Oringi Highweight Handicap rather easily, by three lengths after Great Quex, who finished second, had made a great attempt to win all the way. Great Quex and Twilight Song, the early leaders, were four lengths clear of Dancing Flame and Mataroa, with Bumble next, half a mile from home, but Mataroa took charge at the distance and soon had the measure of the opposition. Great Quex hung on exceedingly well to beat the favourite, Bumble, who finished fast, and should improve. Dancing Flame was fourth, Twilight Song having stopped quickly at the straight entrance. LADY FURST AGAIN.

Showing that she is just as brilliant as she has been claimed to be, Lady Furst scored a clear-cut win in the Woodvilie Handicap after fighting out the finish with the topweight, Dungarvan. The pair, who had dead-heat-ed in the Tonks Stakes at Hawera, were the favourites. Dungarvan made a great effort to win under his big weight, but just managed to head off Siegmund at the finish by a very short half head for second place. Lady Furst, Master Cyklon, Silver River and Dungarvan were the pacemakers into the back, where Play On and Siegmund were showing up. Dungarvan went up to Lady Furst five furlongs from home and the pair were three lengths clear of Silver River, Play On, and Siegmund at the end of another furlong, where Big Dook was with the bunch. Opening up a gap of two lengths round the turn, Dungarvan looked a likely winner as he came into the straight, and still had charge' one and a-half furlongs from home, but was then challenged by Lady Furst, who soon settled the issue. Play On, Siegmund and Hunting Cat were in that order behind the two leaders in the straight and Siegmund, who seems to be returning to form, came strongly over the last few yards to nearly overhaul Dungarvan, ’ who would have been beaten in another stride or two. Big Dook came from well hack for fourth place, with Play On, who ran a good race, fifth, and Master Cyklon next. Helen Ford and Galteemore covered considerable extra ground early in the race. VASCONES AT LAST.

Vascones who, with Newbury Queen, had the advantage of a great jump out in the Sapling Stakes, won nicely, never being headed, but circumstances were all in her favour. It was her first success. Gayest Son, a full-brother to Gay Son, made his debut and ran a great race, being a close third. Vascones and Newbury Queen had a three-lengths break at the turn on Gayest Soig who had run up fast, with Myarion, Iveliua (who appeared to be 6ore), Counter, Sunola and Flying Flag next. Gayest Son got a run on the fence as Newbury Queen dropped back, and then the favourite, Counter, who had won at Pahiatua, joined issue, with Flying Flag coming on the outside, but Vascones had too big a start to he caught. Gayest Son did not go under to Counter until very close to the post, and Flying Flag was fourth. Chevychase, who had been slow away, finished very fast in fifth place,' ahead of Newbury Queen, Sunola, Portal and Keliua. Those who appeared to suffer most at the start were Portal, Caution, Lively Lady and Sanciful. ROWANA’S REPEAT WIN. Rowana, who was a long time in breaking her maiden status until she scored at Pahiatua, was successful in her very next start and, in winning the President’s Handicap, showed herself to be a solid mare. White Gold, the favourite, failed unaccountably at the finish after being three lengths clear at the turn for home. At the start White Gold, who has plenty of speed, soon had charge from Earl Colossus, Haile Selassie, Lady Lyric and Rowana, but the last-named whose good apprentice rider claimed a 51b allowance, was in third place entering the straight, where White Gold looked likely to hold on. However, once caught half-way up the straight, White Gold was beaten, and Rowana came through to heat the consistent Earl Colossus, with White i Gold third. Classical finished well on tho outside for fourth place, with a gap to Haile Selassie, Lady Lyric and Yed Prior. SPRINT TO MITTIE.

Mittie won the Itnahine Handicap nicely from a five-horse field, in which she was installed favourite. It was her second start since she won at Marton, since when she had raced once at Trentham, when she was not herself.

Florence Mills drew the rails position and led right into the straight, but once Mittie got to her she could not stall off the strong challenge by the winner, who passed the post a length in front. Lucullus Lad was half a length away third, with a gap of three lengths to Brunhild, who raced disappointingly, despite claiming a 51b. allowance. Flammarion was another four lengths away. OLD BILL SUCCEEDS.

Installed a very hot favourite for the Kumeroa Handicap, on which he appeared to have a “mortgage,” Old Bill duly succeeded, but his army of supporters received a fright when Sudan was shaken up a short distance from the post to pass Patches in a few strides and literally fly into second place a short half-length from Old Bill, who was doing his best.

Mother-in-Law the only other starter, made the pace to the straight, where Old Bill moved up from the rear to join Sudan in second place and then hit the front at the distance, where Patches was running second. Sudan was pulling hard all tho way and she finished very strongly under the circumstances. Her turn is due. LAST TO FAVOURITE.

Red Cat, made favourite for the County Handicap in a good betting race, duly carried her supporters through. She won well alter always being up near the front. She scored at Woodvilie as a maidsn. Red Cat, Jacynth and Jeanne were the pacemakers, with Jacynth temporarily taking charge, but Red Cat had her measure again at the straight entrance, where Jeanne was third. Huntino, who drew the outside marble at the harrier, and had run up fast early was lying fourth, wide out, with Thrasos next. Red Cat. had no difficulty in holding on, but Jacynth just lasted long enough to beat the fast finishing Thrasos. Imogen was fourth, Jeanne having dropped back to fifth. She was followed home by Joe Louis and Huntino. RACING IN DETAIL. MAIDEN PLATE, of £100; second horse £ls and third £5. Six furlongs. All 8.11. 5 HALLEY, Mr F.
