OFFICIAL DENIAL.

ATTEMPT ON DUCE’S LIFE. Received February 18, 12 noon. ROME, Feb. 17. An official report states: — “The report that an attempt has recently been made on the life of the head of the Government is a false rumour and arose from an incident caused by a madman firing shots in the Via Nomentana, which is nearby Signor Mussolini’s residence.” A further statement says:—“At 2 p.m. on Tuesday, in the Via Nomentana, plain-clothed militiamen noticed an individual evidently mentally unbalanced. They approached him with the intention of calming him and the individual fired, wounding a militaman in the abdomen. The man was arrested and identified as a mechanic, Bruno Simone, aged 38. He had been twice detained in a lunatic asylum, whence he was released last year.
