PETONE MEMORIAL. CONTRrBUTIONS NOT FAVOURED Tlie matter of contributions by local bodies to the proposed provincial memorial at Pctone was discussed at the meeting of local body delegates at Feiiding, last night. Mr F. Purnell (Marton Borough Council) moved that the chairman (Mr T. L. Seddon) urge that the whole cost of the Petone memorial bo found by Zone A. He pointed out that the whole matter of memorials was becoming top-heavy, and, having regard to local contributions for local memorials and celebrations, he felt that the districts should not be asked to contribute to a utility memorial. Mr Seddon said he had been the only representative on the Provincial Committee that had objected to the Petone memorial. Mr Purnell’s resolution was seconded by Mr K. W. Dalrymple and carried . FARMERS’ UNION. A meeting of the executive committee of the Fielding branch of the Farmers’ Union was held this morning, Mr H. D. Richards presiding. Also present were Messrs Leo Knight, W. G. Booth, Y. B. Short, A. L. Brown and H. A. Stewart. A letter was received from the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union asking for the committee’s cooperation in an effort to make Hitchman’s corner a site for a local memorial for the pioneers of the district. The writers asked for a meeting of representatives to discuss the matter.

Mr Booth thought the proposal would not bo very costly, and probably all that was contemplated was a brass plate. He moved that the chairman and the secretary meet tlie Women’s Division to discuss the 'subject, and this was agreed to. A letter was received stating that' every effort would be made to supply men from the Public Works Department service for seasonal farm work or for cutting noxious weeds. The letter was from tlie Placement Office, and Mr Stewart thought the suggestion was a step in the right direction. Members are to be advised that labour is available.

“No doubt the new Minister of Labour is taking a little better view of things as far as employers of labour are concerned/’ said Mr Knight, in moving that the letter be received. Advice was received forwarded from headquarters that the annual shooting match would be held at Cheltenham shortly, and provincial teams were required. The matter was left in tlie hands of Mr Brown, to secure a team if possible. Mr D. Stone, Kimbolton, asked by letter what allowances were made for board and lodging for employees.— The secretary stated that the writer bad been supplied with the information sought. The secretary’s action was confirmed.

Mr Stewart suggested that it would be helpful to farmers if a lecture could be given by Dr C. P. McMeekan on freezing and other matters of interest. It was decided that Dr McMceklian be approached with a view to having a lecture bold in the country district, either at Kimbolton or Colyton, or alternatively at Feiiding. After a further discussion it was decided to ask Dr McMeekan to attend a meeting of the branch at Feiiding, to be held in the evening. A letter was received from headquarters asking for information regarding the incidence of stock diseases in the district, or ailments which livestock are subject to. Mr Stewart said that cases of facial eczema had broken out again in the Marton district. Members were urged to supply the information for the next meeting of the branch. NOTES. It is learned that Miss E. M. Wright has arranged for a mannequin parade showing healthy and unhealthy modes of dress, and a talk on healthgiving foods, to be given in connection with the Fitness Week campaign. Consequent upon hearing a deputation from the Feiiding branch of the New Zealand Defence League, compris-

ing Messrs W. H. McLean (chairman) and G. M. Moilitt, who outlined the aims and objects of the organisation, the Kiwitea County Council decided, this week, to support the attitude of the league and expressed itself in a resolution as being in favour of compulsory military training. The council is to forward a copy of its resolution to the Minister of Defence. / There are now over 1000 telephone subscribers connected to the Feiiding exchange. The volume of business handled by the exchange stalf has increased considerably of late, and the toll section is at present experiencing a very busy period. The months of February and March are tho busiest months of the year, it was stated by the postmaster (Mr A. Orr). In connection with the health stamp campaign which commenced on October 1. 1938, and ended on February 15, 1939, it is learned that Feilding’s effort resulted in the sale of stamps amounting to £lls 12s Sd. Donations amounted to £5 12s 6d, bringing the total revenue to £l2l 5s 2d. Of the total received the Feiiding Health Camp Committee is credited with £63 8s lOd. Last year the total sales ot health stamps in Feiiding amounted to £22 19s 6d.

Members of the Feiiding Municipal Band leave Feikling to-morrow by train for Christchurch to take part in tho Dominion contest. Prior to their departure the band will march through th© town. It waa stated yesterday that the band Iliad raised £IOO towards its expenses by various functions. Tho position in regard to tho payments of rates to date in the Kiwitea County was stated to bo as follows at this week’s meeting of the County Council:—General rates 1938-39: Paid, £4215 9s lid; outstanding, £3966 10s Gd. A meeting of the Feiiding Cricket Association was held last evening, Mr J. G. Eliott presiding. 'ln respect of challenges j-eceived for the Goldfinch and Cousins Cup, it was decided to play Horowliemia on March 7, and regarding a challenge from Southern Hawke’s Bay, it was decided not to make any definite arrangements until the completion of tlie second round of the competition, hut if possible the match will be arranged for March 18. The secretary was instructed to get in touch with tlie Rangitikei Association to ascertain if a match can be arranged at Marton for March 11.
