ELECTION OF NEW POPE.
FIXED FOR MARCH 1. (Independent Cable Service.) Received February 16, 1.30 p.m. ROME. Feb. 15. It is learned that the Conclave of Cardinals for the election of the new Pope has definitely been fixed for the morning of March 1, after a meeting of the Congregation of Cardinals. Mourners at St. Peter’s to-day were allowed to visit the crypt and gaze at the walled niche containing the coffin of Pope Pius XI. MASS AT WELLINGTON. OFFICE ADORNED WITH DIGNITY. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Feb. 16. About 2000 people, including the Governor-General’s representative, the Minister, Ministers of the Crown, members of the Consular Corps, members of Parliament, and representative citizens were present at the celebration of Solemn Requiem Mass in the Church of St. Mary’s of the Angels, this morning, for the repose of the soul of the late Pope Pius XI. The seating accommodation of the church was totally inadequate to accommodate the huge congregation and many were unable to gain admissionThe celebrant was Et. Rev. Monsignor Connolly, Administrator of the Diocese, in the absence of Archbishop O’Shea. The deacon was Father J. Joyce, the subdeacon Father F. AVallace, and the master of ceremonies Father A. Robinson. The sermon was preached by Very Rev. Father J. S. Spillane, Superior of the Marist Mission staff in New Zealand. In the course of his sermon, Father Spillane said: “As the 260th successor of Saint Peter, Pius XI for seventeen years adorned his office with befitting dignity. He indeed ‘honoured the vesture of holiness when he put on the robe of glory and was clothed with the perfection of power.’ He lias fulfilled our claims for the Papacy, claims exemplified throughout the long history of Christendom. May the dying words of Pius XI. ‘Peace, Peace,’ he as a halm of healing to a world torn asunder hy discord and strife. Mav they be as words of prophecy and 'hope. May the sacrifice of his life for the peace of the world bring peace and goodwill to all. not mere mutual toleration of men and nations, but the peace of Christ, ‘that peace which surpasseth understanding and which the world cannot give.’ ”
