NOTES.

On behalf of the local school picnic to be held during “Fitness Week,” the chairman of the committee (Mr R. R. Johnston) and anot«*er member (Mr L. J. Whittington, waited upon business people yesterday and met with a good response in contributions towards the prize fund. The question of providing alternative access from Kumeroa to Dannevirko through the Otawhao block was shelved indefinitely, unless the settlers concerned make a further move in the matter, with the receipt of a letter from the Woodville County Council by the Dannevirke County at the latter council’s meeting yesterday. The Woodville Council stated that, with regard to the proposed Otawhao or Otope Roads, it was prepared to maintain the road within the Woodville county boundary provided the Government dedicated, formed, bridged, culverted and metalled the road. A conference would be futile at the present time, the letter continued. Cr. H. Fredericksoti remarked that it was rather a pity that the settlers affected could not get the necessary assistance from either county, and he suggested that the hest thing they could do would be to petition to be taken over by the Dnnnevir.ke county so that they might lie assisted. “Tliev have nothing to lose.” he added, “but would gain because we are working on a lower rate than Woodville is.” The Woodville Council’s letter was received.
