BRITISH PLEDGE

PROTECTION OF EXPORTS.

CAUSES OE DIFFICULTIES

TRADE WITH GERMANY.

(United Press Association—By Electric T elegraph.—Copy right.) Received January 25, 8.5 a.m. LONDON, Jan. 24. A further warning that the British would protect their export trade at all costs, and the German views on this subject, were features of the annual dinner of the German Chamber of Commerce for the United Kingdom to-day. Dr. Wiehl (Commercial Director of the German Foreign Office) said that the exchange controls and clearings payment agreements had been forced on Germany by her creditors, creating the present difficulties. He was of the opinion that tho recent changes, in Anglo-Gcrmau foreign trade did not justify alarm in Britain. He thought that tho situation could be settled by arrangement. The Parliamentary Secretary for Overseas Trade (Air It. S. Hudson) said: “I disagree apropos the cause of Germany’s economic difficulties. They are due to the development of an internal market under stress of rearmament and the Four-Year Plan. I believe in the settlement of international difficulties by peaceful negotiation, which policy is overwhelmingly supported throughout Britain. f think that we are entitled to expect a friendly gesture in return.” Mr Hudson added that an active export policy was of vital national interest. v.-hieh Britain would defend to the limit, but she did not desire to achieve this to the detriment of others.
