HEAVY FIRE LOSS.

40,000 YOUNG TREES

ALIGHT IN FIVE PLACES. TE AWAMUTU, .Tan. 24. A serious fire which occurred on the slopes of Pirongia Mountain during the week-end resulted in the destruction of 40,000 young trees planted .by the To Awamutu Borough Council staff on the municipal water supply catchment area. Although the cause of the fire has not been definitely ascertained, the borough foreman (Mr It. H. Close), who inspected the locality, says that there is evidence that the fern was sot alight in five different places. When Mr Close and others arrived on the scene, the fire had too great a hold to be extinguished. The wind was fairly strong, and attention was concentrated on saving another block of voting trees, numbering about 35,000. at the lower end. The area is a favourite resort of pieknickers during the summer months, but it is not known if any were there during the week-end.
