MAYOR AS WITNESS

A WELLINGTON CASE. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Jan. 24. The principal witness in a traffic case before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., was the Mayor of Wellington (Mr T. C. A. Hislop), who described an incident on the main highway near Pahautanui on December 17. Andrew Albert Taylor. of Wanganui, was charged with driving in a manner which might have been dangerous. He did not appear, but a statement was read. Mr Hislop’s evidence was that, whileproceeding from Wellington, be was approaching practically a right angle turn. Three cars were approaching, the third travelling very fast past the other two. Defendant’s car swerved very badly, but managed to straighten up and missed witness’s car. Witness bad seen the ear coming, and had slowed down to a verylow speed. Defendant’s statement was that he had cleilred Mr Hislop s car by about two feet, and as he bad not gone near it be did not go back. Defendant was convicted and lined £3.
