FIRE IN CONVENT.

DAMAGE ESTIMATED AT £6OO,

Damage estimated at between £SOO and £6OO was caused by a fire which broke out in the Feilding Convent building, last evening, shortly before 7 o’clock and had it not been for the good work of the Eire Brigade the damage would have been much greater. The building is a wooden twostorey one of twelve rooms, and is usually occupied by five or six nuns, but was unoccupied yesterday, the sisters being absent in Wanganui. A fairly strong wind was blowing at the time of the outbreak, and the ffames had a good hold when the brigade arrived ; they fought for half an hour belore getting the flames under control. The damage was principally confined to the rear portion of the building, where the fire started in the pantry and completely gutted the kitchen, pantry and sleeping dormitory upstairs, while the front part was damaged by smoke and water. The cause of the fire is unknown. Renovations and painting work have been proceeding for some time.
