OBITUARY

DR, J. A. AIACDONELL. Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Jan, 24. One of Hastings’ highly respected citizens. Dr. James Alexander AlaeDoucJl, passed away at his residence last evening. For some weeks he bad been seriously ill following upon a long period of close retirement. A member of a distinguished north of Scotland family. Dr. AlacDonell was liorn at Upper Banffshire, Scotland, in 1555. He wan educated at the Grammar School and University of Aberdeen, -where he graduated, and afterwards studied at Edinburgh and at so mo of the medical schools in London where lie took his ALD. degree. After visiting various parts of the world, Dr AraeDonoll arrived in New Zealand 48 years ago, settling in AVestport on the AVcst Coast of the South Island. Ten years later the then newly-formed Hastings District United Friendly Societies Association called for its first medical officer and, of the 26 applicants, Dr AlacDonell was eventually selected. It was not until just four years ago that failing health caused him to retire from office as medical officer of the association and enter upon retirement. On that occasion the various friendly societies in the town and district combined to accord Dr AfacDonell a complimentary evening and express their appreciation of his wonderful service to the comnuinitv both as a medical man a citizen. His wife predeceased him 14 years ago
