MEAT RESTRICTIONS

DOMINIONS’ COMMUNICATIONS.

COUNCIL TO MEET AGAIN

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received January 25, 1 p.m. LONDON. Jan. 24.

The Empire Meat Council has received communications from New Zealand and Australia which it is considered warrant a meeting on January 31 to reconsider the position reported on January 19. Official circles refuse to discuss the Dominions’ opposition to the imposition of restrictions, but it is believed that the meeting on January 31 will enable the council to forward a scheme to the Board of Trade. The Government is anxious for a settlement before the assembly of Parliament.

It was reported on January 19 that, beyond acknowledging Britain’s riglit_ to reconstitute the Empire Beef Council into the Empire Meat Council, Australia bad not replied to tlie recent inquiries. It was stated: “There is the possibility of a most delicate position arising if the absence of a reply can be interpreted as meaning that Australia does not recognise Britain’s right to ask tlie Dominions voluntarily to accept restrictions. Britain is hard-pressed to meet the demands of home farmers. The decision to instruct the council to institute control of mutton and lamb imports was made under sirong pressure from the farming constituencies in which the Government is endeavouring to revive its hold.
