EXCESSIVE ROYALTIES.
MINISTER’S OPINION. FOR BROADCASTING RIGHTS. Received January 24. 9 a.m. MELBOURNE, Jan. 24. The Postmaster-General (Mr Cameron) refuses to renew the agreement between the Performing Rights Association and the Australian Broadcasting Commission on the ground of alleged excessive royalties collected by the Performing Rights Association.
The Minister says that the association unprecedentedly levies three forms of royalties for copyright recorded music, covering listeners’ licenses, the national broadcasting stations and music played in the commercial stations, hotels and cafes, resulting in approximate collections in Australia of £09.000 a year, compared with Canada, where the number of stations and the radio beerses aro slightly in excess of Australia, of £23 000.
Mr Cameron says ho regards the matter as one for Government intervention, and is acting accordingly.
