The engine and two coaches of the Perth-bound Albany Express were derailed in floods near Narrogin, about 120 miles south-east of Perth. Seventy passengers were aboard the train, but no one was injured.
The engine turned over on its side, but the firemen and driver jumped clear.
The derailment occurred when the express was proceeding cautiously through the flooded area over fouled rails that had been affected by a heavy body of water.
