AFRICA’S POOR SHOWING

PAYNTEII REACHES 243. DURBAN. Jan. 21. Tho weather for the second day of the third cricket Test between South Africa and the M.C.C. was sultry and threatening. The wicket was easy, and England carried their score to 469 for four wickets declared (Paynter 243, Hammond 120). South Africa’s first innings realised 103 (Mitchell 30). Following on, the home side had scored 73 for one wicket at stumps in their second innings (Mitchell, not out, 53). After the resumption to-day, Hammond, in forcing the pace, was bnlliantly caught in the slips alter 178 minutes at the crease. He hit 16 boundaries.
