THIRD CRICKET TEST.

AFRICA’S POOR SHOWING

PAYNTEII REACHES 243. DURBAN. Jan. 21. Tho weather for the second day of the third cricket Test between South Africa and the M.C.C. was sultry and threatening. The wicket was easy, and England carried their score to 469 for four wickets declared (Paynter 243, Hammond 120). South Africa’s first innings realised 103 (Mitchell 30). Following on, the home side had scored 73 for one wicket at stumps in their second innings (Mitchell, not out, 53). After the resumption to-day, Hammond, in forcing the pace, was bnlliantly caught in the slips alter 178 minutes at the crease. He hit 16 boundaries. Tho third wicket stand of 242 was three runs below the record created by F. E. Woolley and R. E. S. "Wyatt against South Africa in 1929. iVtynter, when he reached 233, completed his 1000 runs on the tour. He batted in his most vigorous style for 333 minutes. His score included 25 fours. England batted for 3/3 minutes and added 96 runs in 55 minutes to-dav.

In ' South Africa’s first innings, Hammond frequently changed the howling, not nermitting the batsmen to settle down. Fames was assisted by the wind. Ed rich’s second ball dismissed Mitchell when the score was 59, after which three valuable wickets iell for 10 runs. . In South Africa’s second innings Van tier Bijl was clean-bowled as he was settling down. The others confidently batted out time. Details:
